Information reaching Trail Reporters news desk reveals that the imbroglio between Prof. Nduwa E.S Lale led Management of University of Port Harcourt and students affected by the “No School fees, No Examination Policy” has heightened, as the School fees Portal of the University has been shutdown after the expiration of the short deadline given to students to pay up their fees, thereby preventing students who now have their school fees from accessing the School fees Portal to pay up their fees to enable them sit for their forthcoming examination coming up next month. Investigation by our reporters revealed that the situation led to a peaceful protest by the affected students, which later turned violent when security men shot and killed one of the harmless protesting students. We gathered that the University Management has refused to shift its ground to extend the deadline for the payment of school fees. We learnt that the Management of the University has directed all affected students to pick up a withdrawal form, fill and sign it for the deferment of their admission for one year which affects over 45% of the students’ population which cuts across different departments/faculties. Speaking with our correspondents in Port Harcourt, some of the affected students confirmed the story and alleged that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nduwa E.S Lale has refused to act like a father to them and that most of them out of threat from the Management of the University to withdraw the provisional admission offered to the affected students if they failed to pick up the withdrawal forms on or before the end of August, 2017 and sign it to defer their admission for one additional year, all the affected students will forfeit their admission completely. Documents made available to Trail Reporters revealed that the affected students have petitioned the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, the Hon. Minister of Education and other appropriate authorities through a letter dated 15th August 2017, appealing to them to intervene in the crisis currently rocking the University by directing the Management of the University of Port Harcourt to re-open the school fees portal to enable the affected students pay their school fees and be allowed to sit for their exams coming up next month, instead of withdrawing/deferring their study for extra one year. An affected final year student of Psychology of the University who simply mentioned his name as Okechukwu was in tears while speaking to our correspondents about his dashed hope of graduating this year if he is compelled by the University Management to withdraw his study for an extra year and that his poor parents have struggled very hard to see him through to his final year. As at the time of filing in this report, efforts to contact the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nduma E.S Lale to comment on the issue did not yield positive results
